Mamacita: An attitude or state-of-mind. Cool, sexy, confident, and strong, a Mamacita knows her inner beauty and takes the steps needed to be a fulfilled woman, in addition to being a mom.

We tend to put pressure on ourselves to be “Super-moms”. We think we should be able to juggle an impressive career, keep a house like Martha Stewart, cook like Rachael Ray, and raise kids like the “Super Nanny”. We think there’s something wrong when we don’t fit into size “0” designer jeans weeks after giving birth like the “hip” celebrity moms on magazine covers. Never mind going to the gym – try finding time to be spiritual, artistic, eco-friendly …the list goes on!
The point is it’s not always easy being a mom. The really sad thing is that we put this unrealistic pressure upon ourselves, and beat ourselves up when we fall short.

Most of us go through physical and often emotional changes after having a baby. Some women feel there is no turning back. They no longer see themselves as the attractive young women they once were, and believe life is now just about raising a family. This is not true! When you become a mom, you are still you, only better! Stretch marks, sagging breasts, larger waistline – whatever the “problem”, a Mamacita does not feel ashamed. She is proud of the fact that she brought a life into this world, and knows that beauty comes from confidence and kindness.

Salsa Babies is therefore devoting this page to supporting women and encouraging moms to put themselves first for a change. This is essential for being the best possible mother to your child. While some ladies may appear to have it all together, most of us could use a reminder from time to time. Let’s face it, no matter how beautiful you are, it’s pretty hard to feel sexy when you spend half your time sleep-deprived and covered in poop and spit-up!

We hope this page will help you through those times, and allow you to dig deep and re-discover your inner Mamacita! Take some time to smile, reflect, and remind yourself of how truly special you are. It’s always comforting to know you’re not alone!

Enjoy!

How to be a Mamacita!

Salsa Babies staff share their Top 10 Tips:

  1. Casual and comfy is great, but wear clothes that fit and avoid hiding under over-sized sweats.
  2. Buy new lingerie so you feel great even under your clothes. While you’re at it, go for a professional bra fitting. Things can change numerous times throughout the journey of motherhood!
  3. Spend a few extra minutes a day doing your hair and make-up. Bronzer and lip gloss can make a world of a difference.
  4. Never ask, “Do I look fat in this?”  In fact, do yourself a favour and remove the “F” word from your vocabulary altogether. Remember these words - nine months on, nine months off – at least!
  5. Go out for dinner with your girlfriends and don’t feel guilty about it. (You’ll enjoy it more if you give explicit instructions to call only if there is an emergency and not to find out when you’re coming home).
  6. Keep romance alive! Go on dates with your partner, even if your breast-feeding baby has to tag along.
  7. Find a good mom’s group. It forces you to get out of the house, and helps to talk with others experiencing the same issues.
  8. Take time out to escape and reflect. Enjoy a hot bath with candles and relaxing music, or keep a journal of your goals, thoughts and feelings.
  9. Be proud and confident of your role. It may be the hardest, but it’s definitely the most rewarding job you’ll ever have! Tell your kids you love them every day, and you’ll never lose sight of this.
  10. Find exercise that you enjoy, or get your groove back by taking a Salsa Babies class. Shaking those hips will have you feeling like a Mamacita in no time!

Tonjia believes that mommies shouldn’t have to sacrifice fashion for function.  “I wanted to bring fashion to mommies in a different way; I wanted mommies to feel beautiful inside and out while demonstrating one of the most loving acts that this world will ever witness: wearing their babies.”

Words of wisdom:
Soar off the cliff and see what could be, instead of sitting back and wondering what could have been.

“I can’t remember the last time I…”

  • remembered everything on my grocery list without having it with me!
  • heard a unique name without saying it in my head with my last name to see how it would sound as a potential baby name.
  • brushed my hair without half of it falling out.
  • ate a meal with two hands.
  • found the time for two coats of nail polish.

“My daughter just peed on the floor, and I'm crouched down cleaning up this massive puddle when she looks over and yells, "Eeeww! Yuck! Look Mommy! There's a piece of carrot on the floor!!!"

I think a Mamacita is a woman who is proud and confident with herself. She should be beautiful on the inside and out. I wouldn’t say being beautiful physically would make you a Mamacita, because you can be a model and still not be happy with your life. I think a Mamacita is someone who is comfortable in the body she has. I think it is a woman who doesn’t spend her time looking at every imperfection, but tells herself that she is beautiful in her own way. A Mamacita is someone who feels sexy in whatever she wears, if it’s her black dress and heels or her sweats and runners. She is someone who is happy with her appearance even when she’s not wearing any make-up. She is someone who doesn’t let other people tell her who she is and what she is capable of. She is someone who likes to have a good time with her friends, but is okay spending time alone. She is someone who looks at celebrities and laughs because she thinks she’s living a better life than they are. She is someone who is happy with what she has and doesn’t spend her money on things she doesn’t need. She is someone who is grateful for every little thing because someone else might not have the things she has. A Mamacita can be a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, a teacher, a friend – it can be you or me. All you have to do is believe in yourself. I think if I reach the point of being comfortable with myself that’s when I would think I’m a Mamacita.
